I had NO CLUE what was about to happen to Kate Todd. I, for once, did not look anything up on IMDB or Wikipedia. This is huge for me- usually I research a show to death while I am watching it. This time, I just watched it to watch it . I loved the character of Kate, played by my future wife, Sasha Alexander. I enjoyed both the first season and the second season, and they had a reoccurring villain called Ari. Then, in the 2nd season finale, Ari started hunting all the members of NCIS. Watch the last 2 minutes of the season- it's shocking how they did it:

They do the fake out- you think she's dead, then BAM. Middle of the sentence. That is how they ended the damn season. It's a good thing I didn't watch it in real time- I would have HATED waiting that summer. And you know it's not a fake out like some series (Criminal Minds and your exploding SUVs, I'm looking at you). You KNOW she is dead... there is no faking that bullet hole, or the blood on Tony. It still makes me sob every single time I see it. And the first episode of the third season takes off EXACTLY where they left off. Well done, NCIS, well done. It takes a lot to shock and surprise me. From what I researched later, they had managed to keep that a secret. In an era of internet and spoilers, I applaud them for that- it was well worth the effort.

Geek On.

Day 07

Day 07 took a little searching. As a wise woman once said, "Even the worst episode of Buffy is better then most tv." I would have to agree with that. So this was a personal choice- not an episode that was bad because of bad writing, or bad plot, or bad characterization, but I just don't like very much, and the only one I am tempted to skip over.

Day 07: Least Favorite Episode of Your Favorite TV Series:

And the winner is:

The Zeppo

I have never been a huge Xander fan. This doesn't mean I don't like him- I just find him the least interesting character on a show full of awesome characters. And maybe that's how it's supposed to be- the everyday, the normal one. He has his moments, don't get me wrong- When he talks to Dawn in season 7 about being the normal one, the one who sees, I thought it really showed how he grew and matured. I liked him a lot then.

I just find this episode pretty boring. yes, there is a bomb, a hellmouth creature, Xander losing his virginity, etc. I just... don't care for it very much. Technically, the concept of it is excellent- taking what is usually the "B" background storyline and making it the "A" one- a concept that Star Trek: The Next Generation also used in the excellent episode "Lower Decks" (did I just cement my place in history as a huge geek? I didn't even have to look up the name of that episode!).

Geek On.

Day 06

This one was SO HARD. I had to think about it most of the night, and when I woke up this morning, I still hadn't decided. I love almost every single episode of Buffy, and really, my favorite changes depending on what I am looking for. Comedy? "Him." Tortured love? "Becoming." Scariest? "Hush." Seriously- during one of my visits to Missouri Brenda and I tried to chose our favorite episode from each season to watch- so that would be 14 episodes. Yeeeeeah, we ended up with like 20. We could NOT narrow it down! But, in the end, I made a choice- and not everyone will agree with me, but that's ok.

Day 06: Favorite Episode of Your Favorite Show

And the winner is:

The Gift

I don't even know where to start with my love of this episode. Yes, Buffy dies, but we all knew she was coming back (thanks UPN, for those promos that aired like 20 seconds after the show did!) Here, in no particular order, are my favorite parts that contributed to it:

Anya and Xander: They are not normally my favorite parts of the show, but I love how they panic and have sex, then get engaged. Such a human thing to do. I also love how Xander came through with a FREAKING WRECKING BALL. I did NOT see that coming.

Spike: People either really really love Spike or really really hate him. I don't always agree with what they did with his character, but I did love him in this episode. You can see the surprise when Buffy invites him into her home, and shows her complete trust in him. His mini-speech to her about how she sees him as a man and not a monster brought some tears to my eyes, and set up exactly why he so fiercely protected Dawn the next season. And the look on his face when he realizes Buffy is dead just breaks my heart.

Giles: Oh Giles. Although you wanted to hate him for explaining the obvious- that Dawn might have to die to save the world, you knew he was right. Although we had gotten glimpses of his darker (i.e. Ripper) side, we REALLY didn't know what he was capable of until he killed Ben with his bare hands. He did what he knew Buffy couldn't do- kill someone who was technically innocent. The sound you heard when it aired was 10000 jaws dropping to the ground all over the world.

Buffy and Dawn: Some people either really loved the speech Buffy gave when sacrificed herself or really hated it. I thought it was perfect- what else do you say to your little sister when you know she has to watch you die? That speech STILL has me in tears when I watch it.

Willow and Tara: This had some of my favorite Willow and Tara moments in it- two in particular. The first is when Glory confronts Tara, and Willow whips around saying "She's with me." First of all- most excellent camera work. I re-wound that scene about 10 times on my VCR the first time (Yes, a VCR...I was too poor to invest in my beloved TiVo yet.) The second scene is when Willow crawls over to Tara and you discover that she has her mind back, and Willow tells her she will always find her. Yep... tears.

I could go on and on, but I should stop now... and possibly go watch the show again. I know I have seen that episode way too often, and I haven't seen that particular episode in about a year, and yet I remembered way too much detail.

Geek On.

Day 05

Today took me awhile to figure out- I have plenty of shows I loathe with the fire of a thousand suns, but I wanted to pick something that everytime someone mentioned, it gave me a physical viseral reaction. And I may piss people off with this choice.

Day 05: A show you hate or dislike very much.

And the winner is:

Glee

It pains me to write this. I really wanted to love the show. It had all the things I loved. Gay boys, girls making out, awesome music and dancing, and of course: Jane Lynch, who I have loved ever since "Best in Show." And at first, I loved it. It was pretty good. Not awesome, but good.

And then.... it started to SUCK. Hardcore. There isn't one thing I dislike about it. It just seemed to roll into one big ball of suck. I dislike the Brittany/Santana storyline being relegated to a "joke" and "comic relief" (smooth Chris Colfer... smooth.) while Kurt gets all the "serious gay" story lines. But that's not even the main reason I started to hate it. The writing and characterizations were totally inconsistent. Lessons learned just last week were suddenly forgotten and everyone went back to exactly how they used to be. It's like a big "reset" button was hit every week. In the end, I just can't handle it- and I love most of the music they do, and sometimes will download a particularly good song. *sigh*

Geek On

Day 04

I apologize, it's been awhile, but I swear I will continue to do this- I WILL get the 30 days done!

Day 04: Your favorite show of all time.

I actually had to think between the two shows. There are two shows that I truely love and helped shape my teenage and college years. The first being Xena: Warrior Princess, and the second being the winner of this category (warning: there be spoilers ahead):

Buffy The Vampire Slayer

This will also not come as a shock to anyone who knows me. Let me take a paragraph or eight to explain my love for this show and how it shaped my life.

Back in the spring of 1997, I was 17 and a junior in high school. I remember watching the new network, the WB, and seeing these awesome commercials for a new show. I remember laughing when I saw the name of the show and remembering the TERRIBLE movie by the same name from about 4 years previously. So, that night, on Monday, March 10th, I traipsed down to the basement and turned on the WB. This is the first thing I saw:

I. Was. Hooked. This show looked AWESOME. And even better was the first scene. You have a typical teenage boy and a typical blonde teenage girl breaking into the local high school to make out or whatever. The girl asks if he heard some sound...and you think that either A. the boy is going to turn into a vampire or B. they will both be eaten by a different vampire. But nope- it's the cute blonde girl in a catholic school girl outfit who turns into a vampire and eats the boy. SOLD.

I went to school the next day and my core group of friends had watched it, and loved it. There were three of us who every Monday would three-way call each other to watch the show together (oh, the days before skype and AIM!).

Granted, the first season was pretty cheese-tastic, but I still loved it. I was close enough in age to Buffy and her friends to appreciate what they went through. When I was in college I made sure I didn't have any Tuesday night classes so I could watch the show. I was thrilled when Willow started dating a woman. Of course, my friends STILL tease me because it was my straight friends who pointed out the chemistry between Willow and Tara, and I shrugged it off and told them I was nuts.

Along with Xena, it was one of the few shows that showed powerful, strong women. Even the catty women (coughCordeliacough) had a strength about them I found facinating. Thier lives were not perfect- they were complicated, and messy, and had both ups and downs. Every week I could count on losing myself even just for an hour- and sometimes it was much needed. The characters grew and changed- even Cordelia. When the show ended, I was sad, but I loved how it was done. The finale is one of the reasons I chose Buffy over Xena as my favorite show (don't get me started on the Xena finale).

At least once a year I have a Buffy marathon where I watch all 7 seasons in a row. I then will watch the commentary and the extras. Yep, that's how much of a geek I am.

Geek On.

Day 03

Today's challenge was really easy for me. I seriously thought about it for about .5 seconds.

Day 03: Your favorite new show that started in 2010

Rizzoli and Isles

Anyone that knows me won't be shocked by this AT ALL. I love this show. I would make out with show if it was possible. Of course, I would also make out with my future wife, Sasha Alexander (aka Maura Isles).

I'll be honest- the plots are only average. I do love the characters though- and the season long villain of The Surgeon was pretty damn creepy. But the REAL reason I love this show so much? The very very very very lesbian subtext that runs RAMPANT through this show. I can't even begin to describe it. In fact, if you really want to know- go read Dorothy Snarker's Recaps over at Afterellen.com. The show was only a short 10 episodes, but has been renewed for a 2nd season. And it may just be the #1 slot on my Tivo. Seriously. Go watch it.

Geek On

Day 02

Today's challenge:

A show that you wish more people were watching.

This one was a difficult one for me, because I could look at it two ways. A show that I wish everyone was watching, or a show I wish my friends were watching... because I watch some REALLY popular shows that my friends don't. So I am going with that:

NCIS

I love this show, yet none of my friends watch it. I have one that won't watch it because the science is wacky, and well.. I am unsure of why my other friends don't watch it. So yes, I love NCIS, and I am sad I don't have anyone to talk about the episodes with.

Geek On.

30 Days of TV- Day 01

So, my friend Brenda convinced me to try this "30 Days of TV" thing that has been going on. Basically the next 30 posts will be about TV (I can't say 30 days, as I will be in Wisconsin for Christmas and St. Louis for New Years Eve), answering one question each day. So, hopefully I don't bore you to death. But, let the fun begin.

Day 01: A Show That Should Not Have Been Canceled

Veronica Mars

I admit, I was late to the game on this one. I started watching between seasons 1-2, via Netflix. I pretty much fell in love. I don't know if I can put my finger on what exactly I loved about this show so much. The relationship between Veronica and her dad was pretty damn awesome. They had a mutual respect and admiration, and witty repartee that I found fascinating. I also enjoyed Veronica's two best friends: Wallace and Mac. I loved Wallace because it was one of the few relationships that were the man and woman were actually JUST friends- no angst, no unresolved sexual tension. Yes Virginia, boys and girls can be friends without wanting to hook up. I also had a huge character crush on Mac. She was brainy, she dyed her hair blue, and she was just geeky enough to be socially awkward. *sigh* A woman after my own heart.

One of the best things about this show was the writing. It was fast paced, had some pop culture references, and was just so damn SMART. The show did not shy away from the tough topics, either. It covered everything from sexual assault to murder to socio-economic status. Veronica was friends with the fallen- those in high school that were looked down upon. She was a hero. And for that short year I got to watch the show live, she was my hero.

The show was canceled after the third season, and that's a shame- they had planned to jump ahead to Veronica being in the FBI- and that is something I would have paid to see.

Geek On.

This Is Neither Geeky Nor Lesbian.

I tend to write about think geeky and/or lesbian, but I am diverging for a moment, so bear with me. Today's blog is about faith.. or rather my lack of it.

I am an atheist. This is not a shock to my friends who know me. But it's also not something that I proclaim from the rooftops (unlike my lesbianism, which I would tattoo across my forehead if I didn't think I already looked like a flaming dyke). I believe in a total separation of church and state. I laugh at Flying Spaghetti Monster jokes. But this does not mean I hate religion. I respect other's right to believe, as long as their beliefs don't infringe on how I live my life (aka- gay marriage laws. I dare you to find one atheist who is against gay marriage) . I have some very good friends who are religious and not crazy, so I know people like that exist. I am very well versed in most religions. In fact, I probably know the Bible better then most of the crazy Christians out there.

My place of work ( a university) has been holding panels on various subjects, all titled "What does it mean to be _____ in America?" I had already sat on the gay panel, and last night i was asked to sit on the religious panel, representing those who have no faith. I agreed, and didn't think much about it.

I was on the panel with various religious people, including those representing conservative Jewish faith, three types of Christianity, and one Muslim man. I was the only woman, and the only Atheist. The moderator would ask questions, and we would answer them based on the faith (or lack of) that we represented. I made sure I was very respectful and never directly addressed the other panelists, even if I didn't agree with them. It was going well until the question was asked about creating laws based on faith based texts. I was honest and said that I A. did not think that morals and values had to come from religion, and B. I thought laws that were based on faith were not appropriate. Well, you would have thought I was Satan eating Baby Jesus.

All of the sudden i was being attacked by the OTHER PANELISTS. That's right- the other religious leaders were turning to me and arguing with me about faith and atheism. Then the audience jumped in and started yelling at me. I was literally being attacked from both sides. I won't get into the details of other things that happened, as I like my job and don't feel like putting it out there for everyone, but needless to say: it was a rough night. The only person defending me on the panel was the man representing Protestant Christians. The ONLY ONE. One of the other men even came up to afterword and said he hoped that I found Jesus and God someday. I did get support both from the moderator and my boss's boss. She was there and was appalled at what happened.

I never thought it would be easier to come out as a butch lesbian then an atheist.

Geek On.

Playing As The Bad Guy

In the past few weeks I discovered something about myself, in terms of gaming. It's something I knew deep down in the back of my head, but never fully acknowledged.

I enjoy playing as the good guy.

That in itself isn't a revelation. I mean, who doesn't love being the hero? Who doesn't love sweeping in and saving the day? But with games nowadays, there is more then one way to win the day. And that does not always mean being the good guy. In fact, sometimes it means being a downright bastard.

The games I play the most- the Mass Effect series, the Fable series, and the Dragon Age series- you can win the game multiple ways. You can be a true paragon, or an evil renegade bastard. Sometimes there are even achievements for playing as the bastard. Now, this doesn't mean you are evil. Far from it- sometimes it just means that you are playing as an "ends justify the means" sort of character.

I sat down to play through Dragon Age: Origins again, and as I flipped through the achievements, I realized that I had about 3-4 I needed to get. The consisted of being a total bastard though- killing the Dalish elves, killing off the mages, and pouring blood on the ashes of a holy figure. The last one would be especially hard, as my current romance, Leliana, would attack me and leave the party if I did that. Thinking about actually doing any of these just gave me the willies. In the end, I ended up saving just before I had to make the decision, played as a bastard, got the achievement, then immeadiately reloaded and played as the good guy. This required about twice the amount of time, but in the end I felt better.

So with all the choices that games have to offer, why do I hate playing as a renegade? I am unsure, but I know some of my friends just revel in being a bastard online. I can't seem to do it. I also have an aversion to romancing more then one character. This is especially true in Dragon Age: Origins, where you get an achievement for romancing all the characters. I flat out refuse to do it. First of all- it takes most of the game to get to that point, so it's not a short 10 minute segment. You have to put actual thought and time into it- and end up really caring about the relationship. These three series are some of the few where I can play as a female character- and gives me the option of romancing another female. I see this so little in my real life- including other video games and tv shows/movies, that romancing someone else almost feels like cheating. I like my romances with Liara, Leliana, and whatever random female villiager I can connect with in the game. I don't like the game tempting me with other romance options just for the sake of 10 achievement points.

I guess in the end I just enjoy being the Lesbian Hero.

Geek On.

Fable 3, Fallout New Vegas, and Assassins Creed: Brotherhood

October and November are usually awesome months to be a gamer. And this year, that is no exception. Some really good games have come out so far. I haven't been able to afford Rock Band 3 yet (All I need is the keyboard, but that's around 75 bucks- no thank you!). Here is what I have picked up so far:

Fallout New Vegas: I admit, I'm not a HUGE Fallout fan, but I picked this up and from one of my students, and I really like it. I haven't finished it (not by a long shot) but I plan on playing it over winter break when I have hours to just explore.

Fable 3: I just finished my first play through of this game. Overall, I enjoyed it, but there were parts that I didn't care for all that much. The storyline for the first half was really good... and then you get to the second half of the game. From there you go from gathering allies to overthrow your brother on the throne... to micromanaging. The game does not indicate to you until you are almost done that you need roughly 10 million dollars to get the absolute best outcome for the end (this is of course, if you are playing good- if you are playing as an evil bastard, then you don't need that). So that meant I had to frantically buy as many shops and houses as possible. The game gives you money for every 5 minutes that you play the game. In order to get 10 million dollars, I would literally turn on the game, load it up, go to the Sanctuary, and then read a book or watch tv- making sure i moved the controller every once in awhile. After doing that for 3 days I finally had enough money to continue on with the game. If I had a CLUE even a little earlier in the game, i would have invensted in poperty as soon as possible.

The multi-player aspect is a lot of fun. I played with my friend Rae, and we got married to one another (we needed to do that for a part of the game) and found that we shared money and property when we played together- this was a great way to make some money.

Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood: I have only played 1.5 hours and I am enjoying it so far. I haven't tried the multi-player mode, but i will let you know how it is.

Geek On.

Lazy Weekend = Gaming and TV!

I have a lazy weekend planned. What does that entail? Lots of gaming and some tv watching. Just how I like it.

Gaming: I need to play through the DLC, Lair of the Shadowbroker, one more time so I can write a review for lesbiangamers.com I also restarted Alan Wake on on a higher difficulty (holy shit, that game is HARD), and I have been thinking of picking up Fable 2 again before Fable 3 comes out.

On the other hand, I discovered that if you buy a tv show via Amazon.com, you can download the episodes to your TiVo. So, I immediately bought Rizzoli and Isles in HD. Because really, being able to see Sasha Alexander in glorious, pretty HD? Nothing is better then that! mmm, Sasha Alexander.

Where was I? Oh yes, TV shows. I have been told to try Warehouse 13, and they were on sale at Amazon, so i bought them (not in HD, as I only have 20 hours of HD programming on my TiVo, and 10 of those hours are reserved for Sasha Alexander.) They are almost all downloaded, so I will watch those tonight and tomorrow, switching off with gaming.

Upcoming games: I am looking forward to Fable 3 and Assassins Creed: Brotherhood, both being released this month.

I also decided on a Halloween costume: an Evil Knight. This will be included with black hair and the necessary evil goatee and sideburns.

Geek On.

New Shows, New Dog

It's the start of the new fall tv season! Time to watch the really good shows do well, and the trainwrecks crash and burn. So here is what is new that I added to my TiVo:

The Event: I watched the first episode, and the first thing I thought was: "Kerry Weaver is back!" Then I realized I wasn't watching ER. The Event was a little confusing, and it's chock full of allegory, but I'll give it a few more episodes before I decide if I like it or not.

Hawaii 5-0. Ok, the only reason I added this was Grace Park in a bikini. Yeah, I"m shallow like that. So sue me.

Nikita- What is this, the 8th reincarnation of this series/movie? It's the CW, which scares me a little bit, but i'll give it a try.

Blue Bloods: what can I say? I love cop shows.

No Ordinary Family: This is the one I am most excited about. Julie Benz! Superpowers! Just don't go into a giant hole of suck like Heroes.

On the Netflix side I have been slowly working my way through Dr Who and Legend of the Seeker. Both are pretty decent and I am enjoying them.

Games-wise I took a break- I think Mass Effect 2 killed me. I might go play Alan Wake again, as there are things I missed when playing the first time.

I also added a new addition to my family- a dog named Hawk (short of MoHawk). I got him at a shelter- he is a shitzu, and an adorable little man.

Geek On.

Lair of the Shadowbroker

I will keep this post pretty much spoiler free (unless you haven't played Mass Effect 2 at all, then you might be screwed- sorry!).

I just finished my first playthrough of the ME2 DLC, Lair of the Shadowbroker. So far, I am pretty impressed. A halfway decent boss battle, and a good addition to the ME2 story. But we all know the reason I actually played it- Liara. or, to be more specific- to continue my relationship with Liara that I started in ME2. I have played ME2 3-4 times right now- and in almost all of those games I had a romance with Liara, and then chose to not cheat on her through the second game, hoping it would pay off. And it DID. Of course, I did one playthrough where I romanced Thane, only because I wanted the damn romance achievement. Now I can't remember which character that is, and I am sort of afraid to play Lair of the Shadowbroker with that character- I am sure it will not be a happy/puppy/rainbow ending.

But I digress- Lair of the Shadowbroker was 800 microsoft points, but it was worth it. You get a tone of stuff, about 2 hours of gameplay on casual, and it is a good bridge between ME2 and ME3 (I am assuming).

I had started a new game, thinking that Lair of the Shadowbroker was supposed to take place in the middle of the game. You can play it that way, but then I went on the bioware forums. Apparently the developers assumed most people have already played the game, and a lot of dialog changes if you play it after you have already beaten the game. I plan on doing that with one of my previous characters just to see the dialog changes. But really, all I cared about was the storytelling. They sure do know how to pack an emotional punch into this game- and the DLC is no exception. There are some hilariously funny lines, showing the developers have a good sense of humor about themselves and the game. I approve.

Geek On.

Alan Wake, Red Dead Redemption, and a New Job

One of these things is not like the other. One is something that if I didn't get soon, I might have gone crazy (and no, it's not Alan Wake), and the other two are games I have been dying to play. All three things came true!

So yep, got myself a new job and moved about 2 weeks ago. Unfortunately, I am still waiting for my Xbox and Tivo to be hooked up to the internet, so I may still be slightly crazy. I can still play games and watch tv, I just can't record anything or playing anything online- so that part kinda sucks.

So, two games I have got borrowed over the past few weeks: Red Dead Redemption (RDR) and Alan Wake. Two very different games, and two very different opinions.

RDR: I thought this is would be the game I loved the most. But, so far, I find that I am mostly bored. The graphics and the scenery are stunning, and the voice acting is superb. But, it goes so slow. I am someone who likes to do most of the game (I'm not a total completionist whore like some of my gaming friends, but I do like to get most achievements). And so far, I have been doing the same things over and over again. I am hoping the game picks up, as I am still in the first 1/3rd of the game.

Alan Wake: Now here is a game I can't wait to play again. The story was awesome, the pacing was well thought out- and it pretty much scared the crap out of me. It took me awhile to get used to the controls and the combat system, but overall it was pretty good. The soundtrack and the voice acting were excellent, and some of the vistas were gorgeous.

One last note- I am hooked on a new show on TNT: Rizzoli and Isles, starring Angie Harmon and Sasha Alexander. It's pretty much the gayest non-gay show ever. And I love it.

Geek On.

Home... but where is it?

So, no matter where I lived, I always considered Wisconsin "home," and to an extent, I always will. However, I just spend 3 weeks in Wisconsin, and I had a startling realization. I was so happy to come back to KC and Warrensburg, and I as pulled into KC, I had a sense of being HOME. I was happy to leave WI. I don't have a place to stay there that is my own, and most of my friends don't live there anymore.

It was nice to see my niece Paige for the first time- and hanging out with my bro is always cool. I managed to avoid seeing my dad except for one time- and that was clearly one time to many. I also love my mom, but i just cannot live with them for an extended period of time. In their two bedroom apartment, they have 2 cats and three fucking annoying birds. I cannot stress how much I hate those 2 parrots and 1 parakeet. They are loud, annoying, and i didn't get a decent night's sleep in that apartment. Plus the fact my step dad smokes like a chimney. A nice place to go for a day or two, but not much longer then that. I saw my boys, Tom and Justin one night, and they are still trying to convince me to get a job at Steven's Point, but i don't see that happening. I LIKE living in a place where I have more then two friends, and none of them actually work in Housing. A stable group of friends who don't move every 2 years.

So even though I was born and raised in Wisconsin, I now consider Missouri my home- which is both scary and exciting at the same time.

Geek On.

Panic

I never thought I would find myself in this position. It's one where I am about to lose my shit and start a full blown panic. 3 full months and no job. No job prospects, only a few interviews, and my savings is down to my last 600 dollars. It's panic time.

Not only am I starting to panic, but I find myself not even wanting to get out of bed in the morning. Gaming doesn't bring me as much joy as it used to, and overall I am in some weird funk. I am going home to Wisconsin for a few weeks to see my family for the first time in a year, and to finally meet my niece who is about 10 months old and I have never seen. Yet all i can think is "I hope none of my family wants to go to dinner or something- I can't afford it!" Sad.

When I get home on July 6th, I will do something I never thought I would do again- start applying for jobs at local stores. I hated it when I did it in high school and college, and I am sure I will hate it now- but I really have no choice.

Geek on.

I'm Not In Michigan AnymoreI

That is correct, I took the plunge and moved down to Missouri. As much as I needed to do, physically and emotionally, I am now in a slight panic. Why?

I have no job.

None.

And it scares the hell out of me.

I am a person who has been working at one job or another since I was 14. I never really knew what it was like to NOT have a job. Although at times it's fun to do nothing and "recharge" myself, it's also frustrating to not really be doing anything. I do volunteer 4 days a week at the local university, just so I don't have a gap in my resume, but it's not the same. What it does, however- is give me plenty of time to watch TV and game. So here we go- things I have done while being a bum:

Bioshock 2: I really need to play this game again- I enjoyed it once, and it was a good sequel, but it didn't grab me like the first one. The last 3 hours of gameplay were the best, and I saw decisions I had made affected the end.

Babylon 5: Wow- I am late to this party. On a whim I decided to rent this from Netflix, and it's been pretty awesome. I love how it's basically one huge ass novel told over 5 seasons, and with clues left here and there. I highly recommend.

Skins: Brenda and I started watching Series 1 and 2, and although I don't always enjoy it, I can see how it's very addicting.

Along with this I have been watching way too much TV. Such is the life of a jobless bum.

Geek On.

The Countdown!

Days until I leave: 21

Yes, the countdown is beginning to the Great Move. I am so ready to move somewhere more south it's not even funny. While I am waiting for that, I have been geeking out on both games and tv shows. Here is what i am currently watching/playing:

TV:

The Good Wife: This is not normally a show I would have been interested in, but I decided to give it a try and TiVoed the first half of the season. I sat down randomly to watch it, and got hooked. I'm not sure why, but I just enjoy it.

Babylon 5: Yes, I am waaaaay late to this party. I put it randomly on my Netflix after hearing so much about it. And after watching the first disk, I am pretty impressed. I will continue to watch and see how I like it.

Greys Anatomy: Damn you Brenda, for getting me hooked back on this. I though after what they did to Brooke Smith I would NEVER watch this show again. *sigh* but dammit, Arizona and Callie are just so damn adorable.

NCIS: I will always love this show, but if i get anymore of the Tony/Ziva shoved down my throat I may use the FF button for the first time ever.

Games:

Mass Effect: This game was as fun and epic as I thought it would be. I played through twice using imported characters from Mass Effect 1, and maybe in a few weeks I'll play again with a new character, only going badass renegade. That could be fun!

Borderlands: I was unsure if I would enjoy this game, but Kendra and I sat down to play co-op, and it was totally worth it.

Geek On.

Mass Effect 2

Please let me geek out for a moment. It is, however, a new year, and with a new year comes new possibilities.

I will, in the next few months, be moving to Missouri be closer to my friends Nik, CJ, and of course, my twin. No job yet, but I am not having a complete breakdown quite yet. Give me a month or two.

January is also the month of awesome new game releases. I have already pre-ordered Mass Effect 2, and will basically be spending about 3 days straight playing that (and yes, Brenda, my apartment will be packed when you guys come and get me... I promise). I am also looking forward to Bioshock 2 sometime and in the meanwhile, I have been replaying old games.

Geek On.

Sad Day

So, today was a sad day- I had to put my dog, Damon, to sleep. I found a lump on him about 2 weeks ago, and the vet said it was cancer- and that even with treatment he probably only had 3-6 months to live, and it would be mostly in pain. So I made the hardest decision I had to make in my 30 years on this earth.

I decided that euathanizing Damon was the most humane thing I could do.

It didn't hit me until I got back, and was eating lunch today. I broke off a piece of sandwhich and looked around for Damon, clicking my tounge in the way I do to call him.

I realized he wouldn't be answering my call again.

And I cried.

Winter Break is Almost Here!

So many things have happened the past month, but none more so exciting then.....I have three new video games that I am addicted to. Let's look at them one by one.

1. Dragon Age: Origins. So I picked this one up after seeing some reviews online, and I love anything with "dragon" in it. I figured this would be a great game to pass some time in before Left 4 Dead 2 and Assassin's Creed 2 came out. Then I started playing....and 50 hours later I just can't stop playing. Talk about a game that sucks you in. I started out playing as a Female Human Nobel Warrior, and became so engrossed in the storyline I think I may have actually forgotten to eat a few times. As I was playing, I suddenly realized that one of my companions in the game was possibly hitting on me. One of my female companions. Suddenly, I loved this game EVEN MORE. That's right, you can have male or female lovers. And this works if you play as a male character too. Awesome. I found myself playing this game not only for that, but because EVERY decision you make has a consequence. I found myself pausing the game and thinking about my next move and what could possibly happen. And even after I made a decision, I would start thinking about replaying the game and making the OTHER decision. This is what makes this game so damn re-playable, and I can't wait pick it up again in a few months.

2. Assassin's Creed 2. I am not quite done with this game, but I love what I have been playing so far. The developers clearly took the complaints from the last game and fixed what needed to be fixed. The missions are more open, they added a health and money system, and the character is way more likable then Altair in the first one. Oh yeah, and Kristen Bell voices one of the characters. My only complaint are sometimes the controls are a bit finicky, to the point where I start swearing and wanting to throw my control at my tv, and scare my dog.

3. Left 4 Dead 2. I know Kendra, Han, Hayley and I were waiting for this game to come out, and I don't think it disappointed. Yes, it is the same basic play as the first one, and my beloved Francis is not in this game, but overall I find it enjoyable. The melee system take the game to to a different level, and the different ways of doing the finales give it just enough change to make it fun. I really enjoy that you and three friends can form a team and play a random versus game with another random team. That keeps you from having to find 8 people to play with. Kendra, Han, Hayley and I are trying that out tonight to see how it works. Hopefully we won't have our asses handed to us.

The next game I might get is Batman: Arkham's Asylum. I need something to play over winter break, and that looks like it might be the game I buy myself for Christmas. Or Hanukkah, or Winter Solstice. I have neglected it since, oh, February. I just looked and saw that i have SEVENTEEN episodes of Bones that I have yet to watch. New episodes. That's right, not that reruns shown on TNT- brand spankin new episodes from FEBRUARY I haven't watched. *groan* I am such a bad geek. Add to that about 15 episodes of Medium and I realize I have a lot of TV watching to do. Brenda forced me to watch the first 4 episodes of Heroes so we could have our weekly "Watch Heroes and type at the same time" sessions. I admit, I missed those sessions. Watching on Monday with Brenda was hilarious.

I am pretty sure my Xbox also hates me. A new DLC for Left 4 Dead and I have BARELY played it. I need to set aside some time with Han and Kendra and get back to killing zombies. Not to mention all the music by Queen that just came out on Rock Band 2. *drools* Why I even bother to leave my apartment, I'll never know.

At least I haven't been sucked back into Grey's Anatomy again.

Geek On.

Bad and Good

So I thought a lot of about my life the past 9 months, which has pretty much been insane, and how I have come to define “Family”.

The Bad
Some people may know, but not many, I didn't have the best family life- It was by no means the worst, but it wasn't great. I still have a decent relationship with my bro and my mom, but that's about it. Which leaves- my father. *sigh* I don't even know how to talk about him. 90% of the time, he is a total bastard. 8% of the time, he's ok, and 2% of the time, I think I might actually not hate him. But that tends to go away very very quickly.

I have a confession to make- the reason I haven't gone to see my new niece? Because I don't want to see my dad. Yep. I just don't. The man has been on me about my weight since I was about 6 years old. I remember my first diet when I was 8, and since then I just know I will never be the daughter he wants me to be. Let's not even get into the gay thing. I am 99% sure I told him once before that I was gay, but I was drunk and I think he ignored me. So we don't talk about it. But my weight? Oh, he will be both passive-aggressive and just plain aggressive about it. I go home, and no matter what we talk about, I feel the weight of his disapproving stare on me at ALL TIMES. I haven't been home since my bro's weddding- July 2007. Isn't that sad? I would love to go to a Thompson Family Christmas or Thanksgiving, but I just can't bring myself to go- and sometimes I am glad that I am working on those holidays. I don't use the word lightly, but sometimes I really hate him. For one- he always treated me worse then Rob. Rob was the boy, and therefore the golden child. Ever single game my brother played in middle/high school, including baseball, soccer, and basketball, my dad was there. Hell, he even COACHED his basketball team for 4 years. Me? I played soccer, basketball, and softball, and if my dad came to 2 games a season it was a lot. He didn't care, he never took me to the baseball fields to work on my fielding or hitting like he did my bro. I had to find my own ride to practices and games EVERY. SINGLE. NIGHT in high school. The most embarrassing thing? My own dad not showing up for family night. My mom was in Ohio at this time and Rob was at college- so when they announced my name, no one stood up for me. The worst was my senior year. To this day I still remember turning red and just staring at the ground while my friend's parents tried to make up for it by cheering really loud. So I hate him for that, I hate him for making me feel like less then a person for being overweight, and I hate him for the physical and verbal abuse that used to be almost daily. No matter how successful I am, no matter how many degrees or friends I have, I will also just be his fat, butch daughter. And I hate him most for instilling in me his temper, which my biggest fear is that someday I will lose control on someone who I love- and if that happens I will never forgive myself. So every day I fight for that control.

The Good
So that's the bad. The good? I do have friends and family I can count on, and I figured that out the most over the past 9 months. I know many of you would mock my Otalia addiction, but beyond the storyline, it has changed my life. It started small, my twin basically forced me to watch some clips from the show. From there I found the BPD, and I posted occasionally. After a few weeks, I saw someone started a chat room- and I am much more comfortable in a real time chat then I am in a board setting- so I entered- and found a place I belonged. I didn't get along with everyone, but there were a few people I connected with- Shiva, Bronzey, Sang, Engine, Keeva, Beanie, Gidge, Jules- to name a few. Then we discovered Skype, and that first skype chat was a crazy 8 hours long. From then on we couldn't get enough of each other. I found some real friends who were there when they said they would be there. When someone was in trouble and needed money, we would pool together and give it to them. I myself lived on rice and hot dogs for two weeks because someone needed the money more then I did, and I gladly gave it. At the same time, I realized how much I hurting in my current job (without going into details.) I found that not only were my new friends there, but so was Brenda, Nik, and CJ. It dawned on me for the first time that I was not alone. All my life I have done things by myself. I motivated myself, worked 2 jobs to support myself, and basically never counted on anyone. Well, I did once, with an ex, but that didn't work out so well. I swore to myself I would never do that again. But now I realize how wrong that was. No one should be alone

For some reason, Team Midwest-ish has connected. We are not alike- we are different races, religions, sexual orientations, class, and are in various stages of relationships. But yet... we all work. And I love it. I love that the first time I went down to Indy and met Shiva, we instantly connected- there was no awkwardness. Then I met Bronzey, and after one awkward hug, we were cool. Since then, we have added people- Foodie, Torr, Dar, Burke, Nicole, Token, Bash, Indigo, Katie- just to name a few (and there are many, many more, including a great friendship with Team UK). And we all still connect in some odd way. We miss each other all the time, and are planning no less the 3 meetups for us to get there. Right now we are trying to help a member get out of a bad knock off of Deliverance and into a better situation, and everyone wants me out of MI.

I have a new family. And this one doesn't judge me. For the first time, I think I am truly happy.

Geek On.

Gaming Geek is slowly coming back

I know that I haven't been gaming as much, but I am slowly remedying that. Brenda got me Beatles Rock Band, so I have played that a lot. The new DLC for Left4Dead came out, and the L4D2 is coming out soon. I am most excited for Assassians Creed 2 and Mass Effect 2 to come out. I have no clue how i will afford half these games, but I will try somehow.

I am also slowly working through the backlog of TiVo shows that are recorded. I don't think you want to know the last time I watched Bones. It's not pretty.

Shows this season I am watching:

Cold Case

Mercy

Heroes

Lie to Me

The Good Wife

NCIS

NCIS Los Angeles

Flash Forward

The Forgotten

Criminal Minds

Top Chef

Project Runway

Medium

Numb3rs

Stargate Universe

I am pretty sure there are more I am forgetting, but that's all i can remember off the top of my head.

Geek On.

Butch Label

So, I have been thinking a lot about my identity and being butch. It's a label that I carry proudly, although it took a long time for me to be comfortable in that. It's a label that I make sure people know I use, for a few reasons. After a few incidents over the past few years, I realized I need to be proud of it. I didn't have the luxury of being gray about it because people would just start chipping away at me. But What A Way To Go!

Yes, my loyal friends/readers, the end is near.... for Guiding Light. I have spent the last 9 months of my life sucked into this fandom in a way I have never been sucked before. Ooo, I realize that line was WAY dirtier then I intended. Oh well, I'll keep it in.

Today the show was pre-empted by the US Open. Now, I hate tennis with the passion of a thousand suns, so I am currently wandering around my office mumbling "No Otalia? WTF?" I am sure my students think I am insane.

Brenda is giving me the best birthday gift ever- Beatles Rock Band! I CANNOT wait to sit down and play it. I LOVE the Beatles, and from what I have read the it is a pretty sweet game.

So this weekend will be low key. I'm going to play Xbox, then my staff is coming over on Sunday for pancakes and bacon. And when I say all over, i really mean it. Let me list the states and countries in which my friends are coming from:
Michigan (me)
Illinois (Mara)
Wisconsin (Gidge)
Indiana (Shiva, Nicole, and Michelle)
Ohio (Bronzey)
Kentucky (Kellie)
Tennessee (Katie and Beanie)
Texas (Engine and Sang)
Connecticut (Shortstack)
Pennsylvania (Foodie)
North Carolina (DiNovia and Torrence)
UK (Fletcher)
South Africa (Basher)
Australia (Keeva)

Yes, that is 19 people total that will somehow be fitting in my apartment. They aren't all sleeping here- most are going to the local hotel, but we are all going to be hanging out at my place to watch the finale of Guiding Light.

I am more excited about that then my 30th birthday. Maybe because i am not doing anything on my actual birthday- most of my friends here bailed on me, so I will spend the day doing what i want- playing xbox and chatting with friends. I met up with my Otalia peeps down in Indy and Cincy, and when i went to get my car on sunday- George had died. And spewed oil all over his little gay engine. *sigh* Turns out i blew out my oil cooler. So I stayed with Shiva until it was fixed on Tuesday, then drove the 4.5 hours back. That was a VERY expensive weekend.

But you know what rocked? about 5 minutes after I tweeted that I broke George and was stranded in Indy, no less then 6 Otalia peeps (plus my awesome twin) all offered me money. This is why I love this fandom. Although apparently this is called "friends."

Otherwise, school has begun, and I am looking forward to a three day weekend of nothing buy chatting with friends and gaming. It made my night.

I am very excited that my twin convinced Nik to get an xbox 360- then I convinced them to get Left 4 Dead and Rock Band 2. Muhahahaha, my evil plan is working! Of course, it just makes me want to move to Missouri someday.

So what is going on in geekdom? A few things, actually. Both Project Runway and Top Chef started last week, and I am thoroughly enjoying both of them. Team Rainbow is back in full force on Top Chef, and hopefully they can survive.

There are many new games coming out this fall, all of which having me drooling. Assassins Creed 2, Bioshock 2, Left 4 Dead 2, and my favorite, Mass Effect 2. So, that this means is that you all will NEVER see me online after 5pm, i'll be gaming.

Guiding Light is coming to an end, and with it, the Otalia storyline. I won't get into my intense dislike of the pregnancy storyline, but I still enjoy the entire show and will stick around for the ride. I also have 17 people coming to see me the weekend of September 18th, including 3 from other countries. It's going to be a huge purple dreams blast, and I can't wait.

Last but not least, I turn 30 in about 3 weeks. And no, this doesn't terrify me. I am just impressed that I lasted 30 years on this planet. Go me!

Geek On.

Melancholy

I have just been a weird mood the past couple of days, and it's finally hit me why. All my friends are so damn happy. Weird, huh?

To expand- i don't mean that happy friends piss me off- quite the contrary- I WANT my friends to be happy. I mean, who doesn't? I guess what's bothering me is that all my friends have recently become happy because they all started dating someone. *sigh* that always just puts me in a bad mood.

We hired more new people here at work, and both of them are married or in long term, committed relationships- making me ONCE AGAIN the only single person here. So, no one to hang out with, no one who wants to go try new restaurants, and sometimes what i think is worse- no one to come home to. Guess you never thought of me as a cuddler, huh? (and yes Brenda, Nik, Beth, Carolyn, and Krisana, I know this is where you tell me to move to Missouri!)

99% of the time I am ok with being single. I love my life, i have ways of doing things, and it mainly doesn't bother me. I guess it's when I see my friends all pairing off that I start to think- "What's wrong with ME? Why am I always the friend, but never the person people can see as more then that?" I guess there are various reasons.

Ok, my "woe-is-me" session is over In a few days I'll be back to my happy, go-lucky-self.

I wonder if any of my gaming friends are around tonight to distract me?

Geek On

Inspired? Not so much

So Brenda has been reminding me to keep up with the writing, but to be honest, I haven't been inspired much. So when do I FINALLY think to write something? Oh yeah, that's right- the busyist month of the year for me.

I won't go into my Otalia rant, because frankly, there isn't anything to be done anymore- the show is done shooting, and now we have one month to see what is going to happen. Good or bad, it's already done. Lets just hope I don't end up throwing anything through my tv!

Short recap of the geeky things I did this summer:

1. Met up with other Otalia friends in Team Midwest in Cincy. It was a blast!

2. Went to KC to visit Brenda and the crew- also very fun and they constantly try to get me to move to Missouri.

3. Did my 13th year as a counselor at Badger Girls State. It was not the train wreck I thought it was going to be.

4. Pick back up my gaming. I was slacking a LOT during spring.

5. Yep, that's about it. Now it's time for the school year to begin again!

Geek On.

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://fanaticalgeek.blogspot.com/2009/08/inspired-not-so-much.html' title='Inspired? I’m sorry that we never talked about boys and first dates and everything else that moms hope they do with their daughters. Even today I am hesitant to talk about my dating life, because I know deep down inside it’s not what you want for me.

I’m sorry that even something as simple as clothes shopping was difficult. I know you tried your best to get me into cute outfits and frilly dresses and wanted to show off your pretty, feminine daughter. That was never me. I’m sorry that every shopping excursion up until I was 15 was a long-drawn out process in which I wanted to shop in the boys section and you dragged me into the girls section. Even today, when I come home with a new shirt or pants or tie, I see, for split second, the shame and pain that you have for raising a butch daughter.

I am sorry I will never give you the big white wedding that you want. I know you had saved your wedding dress for me, but you know I will never wear it. Even if, by some chance, I manage to find someone I want to spend the rest of my life with, we will never have the wedding that my brother had. Oh, I know you and Robert and Robbie and some of the family would show up, but I know there is ½ the family that would not. I know that the family friends you and dad would normally go running to talk about the wedding to would not be receptive, even if you told them. You will probably mention something in passing, if you do at all. In your eyes, it will never be a “real” wedding. You made that very clear at Robbie's wedding that family members need to be married into the family, and although I know you didn't mean it the way it sounded, I am still hurt by that.

I am sorry that I am not the daughter you asked for, but I am proud to be the daughter you got. I hope someday, you are too.

Love,

Dany

my bald head

So, I have been slacking lately- but I promised Nik that I would get the video of my students shaving my head. I hate her because she introduces me to other new shows that I love. Get that? But, because I do love her, we have created a youtube channel for all the things that we love- right now it's mostly GL and Los Hombres de Paco, but we'll add more. It's under the name 2QueerGeeks, and you can find us here.

The show this time? Guiding Light. Yes, a soap opera. I swore off soap operas after All My Children pretty much butchered Bianca’s character and relationships. So when Brenda kept telling me to check out GL for their lesbian-like storyline, I balked for a good 2-3 weeks. Finally I started reading articles and stuff about it on AfterEllen, and decided to check it out. Wrong Move.

2 days and many YouTube hours later I was HOOKED. I mean really, really hooked. I found out this storyline has been playing out since January 2008- that’s right- for OVER A YEAR. What show does that? These two women (Olivia and Natalia, aka Otalia) used to enemies, then slowly became friends, and now maybe more then just that. And the crazy thing? No one seems to care. I don’t mean the les/bi women (because we certainly DO care), but the other viewers aren’t all up in arms over 2 supposedly straight women falling in love with one another. After much research and thought, I realized that no one cares because the writing is so well done, and the groundwork laid so thoroughly, that it just seems like an almost natural conclusion. LOVE IT.

Besides all of that, there are a few other reasons I am now in love. First, the writing is pretty much fantastic. Not just for those two, but the humor is great. Usually soap operas are so damn dramatic, but there are some awesome one-liners that have me cracking up. Second, the woman who plays Olivia, Crystal Chappell is an awesome actress. Her facial expressions are spot on and show so much emotion. Third, it's nice to see a "coming out" story so to speak that doesn't involved two teenagers. It is two grown women having grown up conversations. A nice change. And last, there is a very active fan base out there that I tentatively stepped into this weekend- and now I have gone over to the dark side. Anyone want to join me for the ride?

Geek On.

Yet Another Addiction

My life and soul has been sucked away by yet another video game- this time it's Mass Effect. And before you either A. Yell at me, or B. shake your head, please note these few things:

1. Last week was Spring Break, so I had a very light schedule, and therefore could game until my heart's content.

2. My gaming friends keep telling me about these great games, and I of course succumb to peer pressure to go and get them. Thanks Han. I blame my Mass Effect addiction on you. You kept telling me what a great game it was so I just HAD to go get it.

I have played through the game twice, so I am done for awhile. I don't want to get sick of it, so I promised myself at least a month's break. What makes this game so addicting? A few things:
1. It has a great storyline, and that's not something I can say about a lot of games. The storyline actually had me paying attention, and half the time I forgot I was playing a game.
2. The open ended play was fabulous. You could just do the storyline, or fly around the galaxy doing various side quests. And the graphics of the planets were unbelievable.
3. The AI companions were hilarious. The designers did an awesome job of integrating your companions with actual personalities, and they would say the randomest stuff, especially in elevators.
4. The romance subplot. You had the chance as a female character to romance a "monogendered" species. But let's be real- they were all female- called each other "daughter" and holy racks batman- I think that Bioware just used "monogendered" to keep the Focus on the Familiy groups away. But it was tastefully done and I appreciated it.

My next post- How Brenda addicted me to Guiding Light and Otalia.

Geek On.

Top Chef Disappointment

So, last night was the finale of Top Chef, and I was so disappointed. Mr. "my personality is as bland as cauliflower" Hosea won over my Hootie-Hoo, Carla. I was so mad I almost threw something at the TV.

I was angry because for about a month it's been this Who's balls are bigger" contest between Hosea and Stephan, and Carla has just been doing her thing and cooking "with love." It was refreshing to see someone who just wanted to do well, not necessarily beat the other contestants to a pulp.

At first, when I saw that Casey was going to help, I was excited. UNTIL Casey opened her trap and started giving Carla advice about what to cook. Then I wanted to yell at Carla for LISTENING to Casey. *sigh* Disappointing.

I bet that Carla will be very successful though, in her restaurant. She has the personality to draw people in. I am pretty sure some of my friends would agree. Especially since I don't spend nearly the amount of time online with them then I normally do. I am also sure my mother would agree- since she now has to send a carrier pigeon to get a hold of me. I can't help that I turn my phone on silent when I play- I think it's rude to have a phone go off while playing a co-op game. The only phone I cannot turn off is my work cell, and there is no way in hell that I am going to give EITHER of my parents that number. My father would never stop calling it. It's bad enough he has my office phone number....

Now that I have completely gone off topic, today's post is about video games. I played a few different ones this weekend and decided to share my thoughts on them.

Team Fortress 2 (on The Orange Box):
I managed to hook up with about 11 other people to play the various types of games on TF2. It was a decent game, with cartoonish type graphics that made the game very fun. No one took it real seriously, and although it took some false starts to figure out what the hell was going on, we took it stride. There are some people that I was very good at playing, such as the Engineer (I tend to be very devious when setting up the mini-gun and portals), the Pyro (I don't know what that says about me that I enjoyed setting the other team on fire), and the Soldier (long range missiles worked quite well for me). The people I didn't so great on were the Scout (moved too quickly for me to be any good), the Spy (I may be devious, but not THAT devious) and the Medic (too boring for me to run around healing people.) I also suck at capture the flag, but do pretty well at the well points and other games.

Lego Indiana Jones:
Ok, normally I LOVE the Lego series, but I just could not get into this game. Maybe it's because the only movie I know really well is The Last Crusade. Sometimes the controls drove me nuts, and I am not much of a puzzle person, so trying to figure out what the hell I was supposed to do next sucked. I ended up taking the game back to blockbuster.

Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six Vegas 2.
The reason I rented this game (as I previously had no interested in ANY of the Tom Clancy games) was because my friend Kendra was trying to find a good co-op game with an actual story that the two of us could play. I discovered that I really enjoyed playing this game- it was fun to play with someone on the same skill level as me, and although we died quite a few times, we managed to get through the game in two days. We plan on playing it again, and we also had fun playing some of the 4 player games with other people. I might actually purchase this game later, if I find the replay value to be there. I also enjoyed that you could be either a male or female operative in this game (although they made her look ridiculous with all the equipment on- holy huge hips batman!

One of the main things I discovered over this weekend is that having a good solid group of friends to game with is crucial. I have tried playing with random people online in the past, and although not all of the experiences have been bad, most of them are not very good. I find that I run into 3 main problems (at least for me).

The first being that most games don't allow you to find people who are the same skill level you are on. So what ends up happening is that you either are way above the people you play with or way below. Either option is not very fun. If you are of the higher skill, you end up dominating the others, and can get bored quickly. If you are way below, then you get frustrated easily and may get harassed by the other players until you quit. What's the fun with that? And how hard could be be to set up those options in games? Even in TF2 when you don't play a "ranked match", you end up playing with people who aren't in it for fun, but just want to dominate people who suck. I really disliked the poor sportsmanship that is displayed. I am very glad that Kendra and I found each other to play with, as we both have the same skill level and temperament for games- and tend to enjoy the same ones.

The second problem is that once they find out you are a girl, it's like the Dumbass Switch is activated in guys heads. All of the sudden they think you can't play, and are totally patronizing. Then, if you happen to be decent, 2 things happen- you either are not a girl and are having your brother play through the hard parts, or something is wrong with their controller, game, it glitches, etc. Very rarely do they actually say anything like "good job" or whatnot.

The third problem is that once they find out you are not only a girl, but a lesbian, the Dumbass Switch is then revved up to the Dumbass Homophobic Switch. So, not only are you a woman (which is bad enough) but apparently you are a man-hating bitch. It's at this point I either quit the game or switch off my mike, because there is only so much "you must be a fat bitch" and "I'll show you a real man" and other derogatory comments.

I am very lucky that thanks to AfterEllen and the Gay Girls Who Game Vlog that I met some other people (not all are lesbians or even women) that are decent to play with. What makes me sad, though, are the lesbians/bi women who perhaps are foraying into the world of xbox live, and may end up quitting because they can't find people to play with or are getting harassed too much. Even the women-only group on xbox live, GamerChix, is not always an opening and welcoming place. I have observed that the lesbian posts get deleted or are monitored quite closely- and if anything somewhat inappropriate is written, the post is gone. I find there is a double standard, as I have seen posts by straight women who are much more graphic that nothing is ever said too. My hope is that we will find those lesbian/bi women who want to play, and be open and welcoming to them in whatever games they like to play. Here's to hoping.

Geek On.

Vacation, Part 2

So it looks like Brenda and I are pretty even. She won at buying pizza for dinner on Saturday, then on Monday we split the bill at San Chez, the nice tapas restaurant we went to.

It was a good vacation. We managed to watch three seasons of Bad Girls in about 5 days. I am pretty impressed with myself. My staff also came over for dinner and to play Rock Band 2. I have some pretty hilarious video of it, including backup dancers, if anyone wants to see it.

I was asked what I think about Dollhouse, and now that I have a week to process, I think I can write about it. Here are some thoughts about it.

1. First off, I enjoyed it. It was a good first episode, and it it set up both the plot and some mysteries for episodes to come.
2. I liked that Eliza Dushku's character Echo wasn't a kick ass- beat-em-up chick right away. Instead, she played someone with genuine emotion and foibles.
3. I miss the characteristic Joss Whedon humor, but I don't know if this show is appropriate for it.
4. What's up with the scars on Amy Acker's character's face? I'm intrigued!
5. The ending was also fabulous and makes me watch this weeks- that's how I know it's a good show.

Geek On.

This Post is Brought to You by Dany and Brenda

So, Brenda, aka my twin, has been here for about 2 days. We have all sorts of fun things planned, including Rock Band 2, Bad Girls, Dollhouse, and cooking dinner for my staff. We are even going to one of the nicer restaurants in Grand Rapids, called San Chez. Everything was going well.....

UNTIL Brenda decided to tell me she would be paying for things while she was here. Clearly, Ms. Brenda doesn't know the hospitality of those who hail from Wisconsin. We don't allow our guests to buy things for us. So this has made us argue back and forth, until we came to an agreement. A compromise, you can say.

Anytime we are at the checkout line or the waitress is there, we will play a game to see who shall pay. These games include, but are not limited to:

1. UNO
2. Rock, Paper, Scissors
3. Guess the number (We would ask the waitress to think of the number)
4. Thumb War.
5. Pictionary
6. Gestures (or Charades)
7. A staring contest
8. Pirates vs. Ninjas (I am not sure how this would work, but it would be fun to play)
9. Yahtzee
10. Pin the Tail on the Donkey

What other games could we play while at the store or restaurant?

Geek On.

Mid Year Shows and X-Box Live

Today is a two-for-one post. I bow down before the greatness that is Joss Whedon, so I already love it.

Video Game Portion:

Now, I might be admittedly new to Xbox live, but I am pretty sure human decency shouldn’t have gone out window when you put on that headset. Here are the two examples I have had in the past 2 weeks:

A. While playing “Uno” I was both sexually harassed and harassed for being gay. Yes, I do mean the card game of numbers and colors. First I was harassed for being a girl- and asked if I was “hot” and would “do” guys I talked with on live. Then they found out I was gay (you think my gamertag ButchDany would be a clue) then they started saying things that, even with freedom of speech, I choose not to put on my blog. Needless to say, it was graphic and disturbing.

B. While playing “Left 4 Dead” with random dudes I was also sexually harassed.
Check out Lesbian Gamers for an article I wrote that got published:

My Article

2.

Geek On.

Whimsical Musings and Bad TV

I am a little stumped on what to write about today, so it’s going to be a ramble of various things.

1. I am very pumped that Dollhouse by Joss Whedon is starting on February 12th. And best of all? My twin will be here so we can squeeee like the fan girls we are. Eliza Dushku… yummy.

2. I fell in love with the show “Bones” all over again on New Years Day. While I was rejuvenating from the previous night’s imbibitions, I watched the Bones marathon. With the exception of what they did to Zach Addy’s character (really- a serial killer? REALLY?) I love the writing and acting on the show. I only started watching it because David Boroanez was on, but it’s actually a really good show.

3. I was reading an article on “Shows you can’t believe you watched as a child” and it got me thinking. Here are a list of bad shows I used to watch:

a. Small Wonder

b. Out of This World

c. Anything on TGIF

d. Highway to Heaven

e. Renegade

f. The Commish

g. Married…with Children

h. Sisters

I am pretty sure the only shows I would watch now are Anything on TGIF and The Commish. I still can’t believe that my parent let me watch Married With Children when I was 9. That is a list of seriously bad television. Anyone else want to put their list of shows?

4. I have a current obsession with NCIS. No real reason why- I just love it.

Geek On.

Aye!

So, I both love and hate Brenda. Why? You may ask? Well, I love her because we have such the same tastes that she always introduces me to good new shows. And I hate her for introducing me to these shows that then suck all my time. Her newest one? Los Hombres de Paco. From Spain. It's not even in English. Now, I did take 3 semesters of Spanish, but they were the same semester- repeated twice. So I don't think that counts. Beyond "Donde esta el bano," I am not much help.

But, my friend got me hooked on this show via youtube, by, of course- showing me the lesbian storyline they introduced this season. An luckily, the youtube version has them with english subtitles. But now that i have watched every scene with this storyline, i want to go back and watch the whole show. Damn you Brenda!

Los Hombres de Paco (Paco's Men, I think it's called) is about this guy, Paco, his family, and the police station where he works. God, i love European television. They may not show the violence that we do in the states, but they do swear and show a lot of sexuality. I'll take that over violence any day! Anyway, the lesbian storyline revolved around one of the main characters, Silvia, who is this gorgeous redhead that is the sister of Paco's wife (so sister-in-law) She is a Insepctor- which, from what i gather, means she does forensics and some actual police work. I am not sure how the Spainsh police force works. Silvia has been married, divoriced, and I believe miscarried all in four years. So, along comes Paco's sister Pepa, who is a police officer in Sevilla, and moves back home. Pepa and Silvia had shared an illicit kiss when they were 18 that tore the family up. So Pepa comes back, and it's about her and Silvia falling in love. *sigh* I hate you Brenda. And Love You. Thank You. Again.

Some things I now want because of this show:

1. A hot redhead named Silvia
2. A national dance that everyone knows when it is played in a bar.
3. To learn Spanish fluently
4. To move to Spain to be with a hot redhead named Silvia.
5. A friend named Rita.
6. To live in a country where being homophobic is unconstitutional (I about died when I heard a character say that to the homophobic dad of the hot Silvia)

Geek On.

Pack up your predictability and go home....

Today's post is brought to you by Glad, Team Rainbow, and Padma's Sexy Scar. Oh, and Top Chef.

So, it's no secret I love all things Bravo. Ever since Queer Eye for the Straight Guy dragged me in, through my love of all things Kathy Griffin, and of course, Top Chef and Project Runway, I have been loyal.

This season of Top Chef is in NY, and so far, it's pretty good. Team Rainbow is down to one very sexy Lesbian "we are so gay" Jamie, and I am rooting for her. And as much as I love the show, I do have one complaint- it has become way too easy to figure out who is going home in the first five minutes of the show. Bravo needs to work on it's editing. Here are the clues, in no particular order:

1. The person has never really been shown before, but all of the sudden the camera if following them around like they are the second coming of Christ.

2. Other contestants are interviewed about that person.

3. That person is shown talking about how much they miss their family, dog, couch, etc. Or they have something really big coming up (like a wedding, for instance).

All three of those things equal one thing- your ass is getting booted off.

Please, for the love of Padma, STOP making it so predictable!

Geek On.

A trip back to my teenage years through bad sci fi tv shows

So, I have been addicted to Netflix's "Watch it Instantly" feature- mainly because I can now watch all that stuff through my xbox 360. What grand genius thought of that? I spent the weekend not only killing zombies, but watching tv shows that I remember from when I was younger. I started out watching Sliders (at least the first two seasons, after that it turned crap). Then I went on to watch SeaQuest DSV (also better the first two seasons). Then I found a gem of a show that I BARELY remember, mainly because i was only about 14 when it came out. It's called Earth 2.

And its fantastic.

It was one of the first sci-fi shows (at least a year before Star Trek Voyager) to have a female commander. It followed humans as they tried to resettle on a distant planet after having to flee Earth because it was so polluted. They crash land on the opposite side of the planet and have to travel to their original site. The show only lasted about one year, but I found myself addicted to the show again. It actually had a great cast, including Rebecca Gayheart, if you can believe it. I am sad the show only lasted one season, it was pretty good.

So after I glurged on that, I decided to find a good gay or lesbian film to watch. Wow, was that hard to find. There are plenty of gay and lesbian films that were produced independently, but I have to say, most of them were crap. The writing is bad, the acting is bad, or the production values are so bad that I laugh. It was a sad day in gaytown. But, I haven't gone through all the movies yet, so there is hope.

Geek On.

Killing Zombies

So, Brenda yelled at me for not posting for awhile. I apologize, it's been a busy couple of weeks. Today is brought to you by the letter "Z", for Zombies.

I finally have my xbox 360 and have been looking for games to play. It was suggested I try Left 4 Dead, and so armed with my Blockbuster Game Pass I rented it. And it was FANTASTIC. I played with some friends who are in Australia, and we pretty much kicked some zombie ass. Ok, we really got our asses kicked a few times, but this game rocks.

The graphics are smooth and realistic. The sound is great and the characters are pretty diverse. I played single player mode, and it was ok. The bots do a good job of covering you and not shooting you in the back, but you have to take the lead, which sucks when you are hurting and are about to die.

All in all, it was a good game, but the multiplayer mode is what makes this game from good to great.

Geek On.

Joss is My God

So, after a fun week in Missouri (I’ll blog about that later when I am at my home computer complete with pictures) I find myself cursing Brenda’s name. Why?

Because she got me hooked on another Joss Whedon project- Firefly. Yes, I know it’s sacrilegious to call myself a Whedon fan and not have seen it. I really have no excuse. I just never got around to it. So, I spent all last weekend watching it, plus the movie Serenity.

FABULOUS.

I am pretty glad that I didn’t watch it when it came on though. From what I hear Fox pretty much F*ed it up by showing episodes out of order and moving it around and basically making an ass of themselves. They thought it was dead in the water.

Shows what Fox knows.

It came roaring back on DVD and people are STILL fascinated by the world he created. And, of course, so am I. I ordered the DVD’s on Netflix so I can watch them again more slowly, and with commentary. I hear it’s hilarious.

Next up- Dollhouse. I just saw the new trailer and it looks awesome. And of course, it stars Eliza Dushku, aka Faith from BTVS. I’m already in love with it.

Just don’t F it up Fox.

Geek On.

It's Just a Jump to the Left

So, today I had a milestone. One that many of you will gasp in shock and horror when I reveal what it is.

I finally saw Rocky Horror Picture Show.

That’s right, I have never seen it. Even the movie. Ok, I think I started watching the movie when I was 10, and fell asleep. But I hope you don’t think less of me. Because even though I was but a young geek then, I just didn’t understand what I was watching.

Now I do.

And it was fabulous.

I saw the stage version here in Kansas City, and we have fabulous seats in the 2nd row. I was forced to keep quiet by my twin and not tell our companions (Beth, our half-sister, my Twin’s mylady, half-sister’s friend, and family of half-sister’s friend.) Perhaps I will create a flow chart so you can keep track of everyone.

But anyway, this show is pretty much the most insane thing ever. Transvestites, sex, aliens, and maid costumes. I am pretty sure everything and the kitchen sink was in this production.

And it was FABULOUS.

The woman who played Magenta made me laugh hysterically and pretty much fall in love with her.

Geek On

We Can Be Heroes, Just for One day

So, I love the show Heroes. I don’t think it’s as good as it was in the first season, but it’s still some nice television for me to lose myself into. Normally I just laugh at the stupid in the show, but today actually made me go WTF out loud to my dog.

The WTF:

1st. Mohinder, you are the dumbest person EVER. How many times does a strange company have to stab you in the back and be out for world domination before you realize you shouldn’t trust them? It’s like you have 3 total brain cells and they are all fighting each other for domination. And they are all losing. STOP TRUSTING COMPANIES. And take the moron Mya with you.

2nd. Oh Claire, I know the stereotype of the cheerleader is a dumb blonde, but I thought you rose above that. I was wrong. Oh so wrong. Why in the world did you think that taking Elle, who can’t control the electricity pouring from her body, on a plane? Heeeeeeello! You can’t even work a damn Ipod on a plane, much less Ms. Electric Company.

3rd. Peter. What can I say about Peter? So, he really thought he could take on his super powered dad with a ficken chair?

4th. Nathan and Tracy/Jessica/Nikki/Whatever-the-hell-your-name-is. Yawn. When you are on, it’s when I go to the bathroom.

So, here are the good parts, or at least the parts that didn’t suck.

1st. Oh, the slashy goodness that is Elle and Claire. That sound you hear? It’s a thousand fanfic writers frantically typing away after tonight’s episode. And I, for one… will read them all.

2nd. Matt- you actually became interesting. Your power doesn’t suck. Good for you!

3rd . Sylar: I have gone from hating you to being way intrigued to your storyline. Can you overcome genetics? I am sure there are some “If you Love Jesus Enough You Can Be Straight” organizations that would say “yes”. *coughExoduscough* . But then you go back to being evil. It’s like a guessing game every week.

4th: Noah and Claire’s Bio-Mom. It’s a good combination that works well. Of course, I always love HRG. He rocks.

Here are the ambivalent:

1st. Ando and Hiro: I used to love you two. Now, I am not sure what I think. Can you please do something interesting and not make you both look like morons.

2nd: Daphne: I am not sure what I think. Don’t break Matt’s heart.

Geek On

So Say We All

Halloween.

I love Halloween. Now, I’ll be honest, I am only a casual watcher of AMC, and usually only when Bianca is on. And yes, I did start watching it back in 2000 because I heard she was coming back as a lesbian. Somewhere along the way I found myself really liking the character. So, now I usually only watch it when Eden Riegel reprises her role. And, she has come back for an extended stay. So, I tuned in to watch.

And remembered how INSANE soap operas are.

A short recap: I tuned in as a huge ass tornado hit Pine Valley, basically putting EVERY SINGLE CHARACTER in mortal danger. Bianca showed up into town about 10 minutes before it hit. And she was pregnant. 8 months pregnant, and she didn’t tell anyone. Seriously? NO ONE? Then she gave birth with the father of her child (who happens to be her brother-in-law) in the middle of the beach house which was completely destroyed. Then she went to the hospital just as ANOTHER tornado hit. Where is Pine Valley? Kansas?

So, why am I geeking out? For a few reasons. First of all, I have never laughed so hard in my life then when Zach held up the unnamed baby like she was Simba in the Lion King. The background was so obviously fake and I couldn’t stop laughing for a good 10 minutes.

Second, Binks (as she is called) started talking non-stop about her “partner” (and I almost keeled over when I heard them actually use that term) named Reese. We haven’t actually met her yet, but apparently she is the love of Bianca’s life. The way that Bianca has been talking, I now expect Reese to come to town in a carriage that is pulled by 12 pure white swans. She will descend from the carriage with birds singing around her and possibly a cute animal sidekick who talks.

Third, I have yet to hear Erica Kane call any of Bianca or Kendell's children her “grandchild”… and I will fall off the couch if I ever do. No one calls La Kane “grandma”

Good thing I Tivo it so I can ff through the parts I don’t care about.
